Finding a Prosthetist Tip Sheet
While there are thousands of prosthetists across the nation, the learning curve for upper extremity prosthetics is extensive. Finding the right practitioner who specializes in upper extremity prosthetic rehabilitation can be a challenge. Be certain that the prosthetist:
- Is certified by the American Board for Certification (ABC)
- Has a minimum of five years of current upper extremity experience and has fit more than 10 patients in the last year
- Can specify what types of electrically-powered prostheses they have fit in the past two years

Has received certification and training from the following prosthetic component manufacturers:
- Motion Control: Utah Arm 3, ProControl 2, Electric Terminal Device
- Otto Bock: Electric and body-powered prostheses including the Michelangelo Hand with AXON-Bus Prosthetic System, DynamicArm, DynamicArm TMR, MyoRotronic, SensorHand Speed, MyoSelect, MyoCom, Transcarpal Hand and PAULA
- RSLSteeper: Bebionic 3
- Touch Bionics: i-LImb Ultra, i-Limb Digits
- Liberating Technologies: Boston Elbow
- Hosmer: Electric and body-powered prostheses
- Works with an occupational therapist who has extensive upper extremity experience
- Will arrange for you to speak with some of their patients to discuss their prosthetic care experience
