Pre-Prosthetic Care

Pre-prosthetic training helps prepare the patient for prosthetic use.

Pre-prosthetic therapy may include scar and soft tissue management and will focus on residual limb shaping, muscle training that uses biofeedback software, and developing upper limb strength and endurance. Teaching the patient to coordinate different muscle functions, like isolating and contracting muscles simultaneously, is accomplished by providing verbal instruction and cues.

Education is another important dimension of pre-prosthetic therapy and includes topics such as overuse, nerve entrapment, scoliosis, the long-term consequences of prosthetic use or non-use, and guidance on preventing or reducing back and neck pain.
